Ex-Designer Velvet Magnolia dress

I bought this fabric from New Craft House aggggess ago and wasn’t sure what to make but I’d earmarked it for my bestie’s wedding since she was getting married on 21st December. After making a few Deer and Doe Magnolias I decided it would be just amazing in this sumptuous velvet so I took the plunge and in my usual style, left it until only 4 days before the wedding to make it!

I used a lovely silky fabric from Sew Me Sunshine for the lining and although I had a mild panic that at the sleeveless stage the colour combo looked like a Peter Pan costume, once I’d sewed on some huge puffy sleeves, adapted from the original Magnolia sleeves, my mind was put at ease.

The only other adjustment I made was to make the waist tie longer so that it could wrap round and tie in a bow at the front. Since the fabric is thick, it’s a real big bow but I quite like that for Christmas anyway. Unbelievably the invisible zip went in without problem. I really thought the thickness of the fabric and the nap of the velvet would cause issues but nope!

It was surprisingly not boiling hot to wear, and although the neckline got plungier and plungier as I danced the night away and ruined all my hand sewing on the neckline, I enjoyed feeling thoroughly festive.
